Johnny Weir got screwed

When I was a little girl, my relationship with my dad went as so:

Sunday afternoons and Monday nights: Football

Winter evenings: Syracuse basketball

Summer: SF Giants whenever they were playing in Atlanta (TBS), Chicago (WGN & Harry Caray) or New York (MSG)

And every four years, during the month of February: male figure skating.

I have such fond memories of the Battle of the Brians, Dick Button* saying of Bowman the Showman "Every day with Christopher is like a car wreck", Elvis Stoiko and Philippe Candeloro. Rooting against the -enko's and -ovich's and their boring, flawless performances. Numerous toe-loops, salchows and flying camels.

Tonight the Russian deserved his gold medal, but that damn Canadian doofus Buttle, who consequently fell on his Buttle, and the Swiss dude with the most heinous, tiger-striped outfit of all time, didn't deserve to finish in front of the Caravaggio-faced Johnny Weir.

To all the figure-skating judges out there reading tonight, may I just say...Stop the insanity!!!

Comments:
I think you're right about all the other skaters, but it was also Plushenko who turned in a rote performance last night. He seems to have lost flexibility over the years--where was the famous Biellman spiral/spin he used to do?

To me it seemed he was telegraphing, OK, I'm here to drill some jumps and spins, wave my arms a bit, and collect MY gold. Kwan got crucified for a conservative free skate in Nagano--others get away with it.

Talk about a sense of entitlement.
And the skater who most embodies the grace that Plushenko USED to have? J. Weir.

Well, we can hope P will retire and not go to Worlds and perhaps Weir can finally get his act together.

I wasn't all that impressed with Weir's performance. He didn't have a quad, he messed up his triples, and by the end he knew he was in trouble and skated like a zombie. While I also hated Lambiel's tiger suit, he had a better program. As for Buttle, I thought the kid was great! I'm pulling for him in 2010. Not that I don't enjoy Weir. His short skate was terrific. But all the same, he just didn't have the kind of night that produces a medal. Incidentally, while I concede most Russian male skaters are like marionettes, never lump Viktor Petrovich in there. The man is a class act. I've yet to see a male figure skater who is his equal.

I was thiking lasat night I wish I had been watching Brian, Scott orKurt. The Russian is outstanding but some of the other skaters were more graceful.Wiyh the new scoring system all you have to do is swing your arms around and do a few jumps. Johnny did prttray gracefulness and the other requirements. Please dont look at the spelling but I was not redoing it. Pat

He didn't get screwed....he got BEATEN....and it is a national failing that we can't learn to accept it when it happens! If he had spent less time boring us with his petty comments, and talking himself up as the new rebel wunderkind, and more time working, we might not have been writing this blog at all!
